The Doctrine of Sin

The Doctrine of Sin

Sin-Offence against the law of God (1 John 3:4) and rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7, Joshua 1:18)

Sin first entered the world in the Garden of Eden. When Adam first sinned, it forever affected humanity. God made Adam to be a representative or head of the entire human race; therefore his actions affect us all. Humans became sinners by nature bringing forth death and depravity. We are not sinners because we sin; rather, we sin because we are sinners.

Three strikes against you

Your nature– imputed sin, the seed of Adam

-Actual sins- daily actions of sin

-Divine verdict- “all have sinned and come short” “there are none that are righteous”

The results of sin: Depravity

-Unrighteousness (behavior)

-Fallen/ungodly (position)

-Sinful, dead, lost, blind, deaf, faithless (condition)

The consequence of sin was not only death, but also moral corruption, which is everywhere in our world today.

Due to our fallen nature, man is not inherently good (common belief to justify many going to heaven)

The Need:

Mercy: don’t get what I deserve (hell, condemnation, judgment, punishment, destruction, death, and separation.)

Grace- get what I don’t deserve (salvation, righteousness, position, life, light, faith, vision, gifts, heaven, adoption, fellowship, hope, opportunity, divine nature, and power.)

The solution of sin

 Self-satisfaction through self- substitution

It took all facets of the Godhead to “defeat” sin. Christ (God) needed to be the sacrifice to atone for our sins. He was the only substitution that would be satisfactory and make true amends for sin.

We will not have true appreciation for the gospel until we understand sin.

Daily Application

The Doctrine of sin shows me my need for a savior. I am reminded everyday by my sinful actions that I am in need of Christ and His forgiveness. When we realize the significance of our sin and our actions, we realize how fallen we truly are.
